Hi I am new to the forum and hoping there is someone out there who can help me. I have a problem with the passenger door check (RHD). I have taken the inside door panel off and felt around inside the door. It appears the door check runs through a mechanisms inside the door with a little brass roller that stops the door opening too wide. I have recovered the roller from inside the bottom of the door. Whatever was holding it in place must have sheared off. I cant get the mechanism that holds the roller out from inside the door to fix or replace it. There is one 'allen head' type screw on the inside of the door (ie under the door trim) that I can get to. I can loosen the housing mechanism but there is something else on the inside of the door (ie same sort of area as where the door hinges are attached) that is stopping me from removing it. There is no other externakl fixing that I can see. Can anyone help. I have noticed some discussion a while back from someone mentioning they were going to replace the door checks on their car but they did not say how they were going to do it. Appreciate any advice anyone has to offer. Chris in Australia. 380 SLC
On my 79 450SL, there is a second allen head screw on the front of the door (where the hinges are). Its hidden under the door seal which you can gently pry back to access. I've yet to replace my door check. To do so, I've been told that you need to move the window motor/regulator.
Thanks, I will have a look and let you know how I go. I have seen mention on other discussion groups about having to remove the window and the motor. Other posts say all you have to do is to move the motor slightly out of the way but not remove it completely and there is no need to touch the window. I will let you know about this as well. Most people seem to say it is a tough job because of the limited space. My next problem is going to be locating a new door check. My options only seem to be ex Germany and they are not cheap. Even ex USA by the time I pay the exchange rate and shipping it will not be much different than ex USA.
I just replaced a door check on my '84. Instead of removing the motor, etc., I took a short cut and took off the door check 'arm", installed the door check mechanism, and then afterwards, the arm. It was a little bit of a hassle since the two springs are pretty strong, but I opened them up with a big screwdriver on a wooden block fulcrum, so I wouldn't damage the door paint. Worked fine, and took a lot less time. $174.00 for the part! Ned
