The gas gage on my '83 500 sl has become possessed. The needle is swinging wildly from 1/4 to full, at times an amber triagle shaped light on the left side of the gage lights up for an instant. What does it all mean? How does one troubleshoot? Start by checking fuses I assume. thanks, DickDoc
Your sending unit is starting to fail. It's probably the easiest swap you can do. All you do is lift the soft top, and you'll see a plastic hole cover beneath. Remove it, and you'll see the top of the fuel sender. You'll need a BIG socket to remove it (I rented mine from a Rent-All place). Stick the new one in place (don't overtorque!), put the connector back on, and voila!
