I recently aquired a 72 350SL as a restoration project. While I was attempting to assess the condition of the convertible, I was unable access the storage compartment. It appeas that the lever is stuck and will not move to the proper position ("C" as per owners manual). Is there an over ride somewhere that will allow me to open the convertible storage compartment or do I need a bigger hammer and screw driver (just kidding)? Any thoughts or ideas how to open the compartment will be appreciated.

This is tricky to describe, but the RH side latch (right hand as you view from the rear of the car can be unlatched with a coat hanger pushed through to that compartment (looped on that end), and by pulling back on the cable once you catch it. The LH side is a little trickier and can be done with a long, thin screwdriver (use a small flashlight to push back on the latch). Have a friend push down a little on the cover while you do this.

It MAY be that the gasket is sticky or the top is rusted to the gasket. The cable is known to be misadjusted or bad/stretched; it's a PITA to get right.
