This is my first post. I'm the proud owner of a '74 450sl. I have had my car parked all winter (last driven probably late October last year) And went to jump/start it. It started rough, cleared up, ran about 10 minutes then died. I pulled the plugs (autolite double platinums are what i had in) and the were ALL fouled. So! replaced with all new plugs. Car started right up, ran BEAUTIFULLY for a few minutes then died again. No restart after that (this was 3 days ago) I removed the plugs to find they had fouled again. Smelled of gas.
Just tried to start today, started up like 3 times (with the fuel fouled plugs) then died almost immediately.
This is probably obvious to alot of you. My interest in cars and DIY is fairly new, so any ideas are welcome!
Sounds like weak fire to me, since all the plug are fouling. I would clean the points & dis. cap & then check fire at plug. I have a 450sl & always have to do this if I let the car setup for a while.
