Hello,

My first post in a few years. I guess the database has changed as my old account did not work and I had to register again under a new email address. Anyway, I'm rebuilding my 380 heads (1981 SL) and noticed that the new valve stem seal kits contain two different seals. One is flat on the top and shorter and the other is taller and flared at the top. Additionally, the inner diameter of the stem on the taller version seems larger as the valve does not fit snugly inside (maybe its not supposed to?)

The engine manual does not tell you which type of seal goes on which guide (intake or exhaust). They do point out that the correct seal type must go on the proper guide but the drawing is not much help in showing which goes where.

Can anyone help?

I don't know the answer but I wouldn't be surprised if you could get a quick answer by calling Metric Motors in CA; if you tell them you're a member of this forum (and any other Mercedes clubs, that may help). They are really great and know their stuff. Might be worth a try.
