Any one know what size AMG Aero II Monoblock wheels will fit on a 560SL?

I normally lean towards the purist side (even the radio is original), but the one thing I'm just not happy with are the stock rims it came with. I've been looking for something a little more sporty looking but not too crazy. This looks good to me:

any idea what size those are?

You can be a purist, have your cake and eat it too.

The ideal size, from what I gather off German 107 enthusiast sites, is the AMG 8 J x 16 H2 ET 11, with 225/50 VR 16 tires. Wider than 225 is not recommended by them for the 107, for whatever reason.

I know the Aero 1 came in the 16x7.5 and 16x8 size. They also come in a 17", and while I think you can fit those on a 107 with a hubcenric ring/spacer, it may look a bit absurd, but that is MHO. I have seen some cars on BENZWORLD and the German 107 club forms with those rims.

AMG in the 80's made rims in 15", 16" and 17" sizes. 17" was considered HUGE back then. I'm sure the early AERO 1 and 2 are both available in 16" and 17" sizes if you look around, though they will be be used.

Always double check to be sure.
They mostly can all be fitted by a tire specialist with hubcentric rings/spacers, regardless, except the really wide ones.

They made a 16" AMG Aero 2 rim for the last MB C class, but they may look a bit too modern and rounded for the 107. Very easy to find.

If you find a pair of AMG AERO 1 (they came out in late 1985, the first AMG monoblock alloy rims after the Penta, with the plain AMG logo, not ///AMG...they are similar to the Aero 2, but less rounded). Here is a photo of the most expensive AERO 1 version, a 3 piece rim from the late 80's:

And here is the first commercial AMG rim, the early AMG PENTA (early 80's up to about 1989) rims, with the original AMG emblem in the center (not the newer ///AMG.)

With either of these, you would have period correct 1980s AMG rims for your car. Hard to find, but they would be the right AMG rims for the car if date/period are important to you.

I am looking for the original Aero 1 (pre-Hammer ,pre ///AMG rims) myself, just in case. The HAMMER Mercedes sedan was when the Aero 1 really took off as a successful design.

An early Aero 2 rim is the latest I would go, as they are 1990s. Anything with the ///AMG logo is newer and technically not "correct" for the 107. In the 80's the AMG logo was just AMG.

But if you love it, it doesn't matter. Smile

Hey thanks for the info. That was really helpful. I think I'll just have to keep my eye out for some 16" aero 1's.

BTW, can you tell if the wheels in the link from the original post are aero 1 or 2's? They look pretty flat, so does that make it more likely to be aero 1's?

They look like Aero 1. I think those would be almost perfect.
I can only seem to find a set of AMG Penta rims in LA, and I have never been crazy about them, although they are growing on me. But the Aero I like; it's sporty without being ugly. The Aero was really expensive when new in the 1980s, before Mercedes bought AMG...almost 2k for a set at BHMA in L.A..

I think there's a set of the early AMG 5-spoke rims on eBay...

I have seen 2 sets of the original AMG Aero 1 on 107s in LA just recently...neither was for sale Mad (maybe I can race after the owners next time...)
Both sets were chromed, and I think the chroming looks TERRIBLE on these first series sharp edged Aero 1 rims. The design is so perfectly flat and sharp (flatter than the later Aero designs and the flat MB rims from the 86-89 107s) that you can see all the slight uneven imperfections in the chroming...it's not pretty when they move. I have noticed this on both sets. It must be difficult to chrome the flat face of this wheel.
If you find a pair I would recommend powdercoating them, or maybe clear coat.
It's more in the AMG spirit, regardless.
Chrome seems to work nicely on the other AMG rims and all the standard MB rims, but on this particular first generation AMG Aero 1 rim it looks really uneven, and I noticed this on 2 different cars, with all 4 wheels!

Powdercoat.
That's what I would do, anyway. Smile
